The J.W. York Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn is a fine instrument for brass band and orchestral musicians seeking a high-quality, traditional-style aluminum instrument. This horn boasts a rich, warm sound and exceptional craftsmanship that sets it apart from other alto horns on the market.
The 17850 61 model is crafted from 0.425 inches (10.8 mm) seamless drawn aluminum tubing, ensuring a consistently smooth bore and even tone throughout the instrument. This tubing is drawn using a traditional hand-drawn process, which results in a more uniform and consistent wall thickness, contributing to a superior sound quality.
TheYork Sons 17850 Alto Horn features a traditional cylindrical bore and comes with a modified Watson F-style mouthpiece, which is included in the purchase. The mouthpiece is designed to provide a more consistent response and projection, as well as a larger rim for added comfort. The instrument also includes a high F musical shank, allowing for the performance of F and G sharp notes.
The 61-key valve cluster on the J.W. York Sons 17850 is a traditional design, consisting of piston valves for easy operation and quick response. The valves are engineered for quick action and precision, minimizing the need for excessive effort from the player to switch between notes.
The instrument's engraving is performed by skilled craftsmen using traditional methods, giving the 17850 61 Alto Horn a visually stunning appearance. The precision-drilled water keys offer consistent water flow to maintain a clear sound and prevent excessive moisture buildup.
Weighing in at an impressive yet manageable 4.41 pounds (2.0 kg), the 17850 61 Alto Horn is both portable and comfortable to hold for extended playing sessions. Its compact size, measurements approximately 23.2 inches (58.9 cm) in length, makes it well-suited for travel and storage in confined spaces. The instrument comes with a hard-shell carrying case, designed to protect the horn during transportation.
In summary, the J.W. York Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn is a professional-grade, handcrafted instrument that not only delivers an exceptional sound but also offers a beautifully traditional appearance. This horn's combination of traditional design, high-quality materials, and precision manufacturing techniques make it an ideal choice for brass band and orchestral musicians who want a high-performance, traditional-style alto horn.
J.W. Pepper & Sons is a well-known music retailer, and the 17850 61 Alto Horn is one of their offerings. The Alto Horn is a medium-sized brass instrument, commonly used in wind bands, orchestras, and jazz ensembles. Here are some potential pros and cons of purchasing a J.W. Pepper & Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn:
Pros:1. Affordable: The J.W. Pepper & Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn is priced lower than many comparable horns from well-known manufacturers.
2. Basic Functionality: The horn is suitable for beginners or for those who only need a functional horn for various engagements.
3. Medium to Large Bore: The alto horn's medium to large bore enhances its ability to produce a rich, full sound, making it ideal for various musical genres.
4. Adjustable Third Valve Slide: The third valve slide is easily adjustable and can be fine-tuned to compensate for intonation issues.
5. Durable: Brass instruments, like the Alto Horn, are generally known for their durability, making them a worthwhile investment, especially for budding musicians.
Cons:1. Basic Design: The 17850 61 Alto Horn's design may not appeal to more advanced players or those seeking professional-grade features.
2. Intonation: The intonation of the horn may require significant adjustment, particularly in the upper register.
3. Finish: The brass finish may tarnish or discolor over time, requiring regular maintenance and cleaning to prevent oxidation.
4. Limited Accessories: The horn does not come with all the necessary accessories that might be required to get started playing right away.
5. Lack of Customization: The J.W. Pepper & Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn's design is not customizable to cater to an individual's playing style or preferences.
In conclusion, the J.W. Pepper & Sons 17850 61 Alto Horn is a viable option for beginners and those in need of a functional alto horn at an affordable price point. However, it may not appeal to professional or advanced musicians due to its lack of customization and professional-grade features. Additionally, some maintenance and adjustments may be required to achieve optimal performance. If you are a dedicated band member, or simply a music enthusiast, and are comfortable with the limitations, this horn could be a suitable choice for you. If you are an advanced player or require a more customizable alto horn, it is advised to consider investing in a higher-end model.
Details:
This doesn't affect playing, but it makes Little harder to get the valves out oil/fix. Denting on lead pipe, but can still take a mouthpiece. Valves move smoothly except the 2nd valve, which is dented badly. If you decide not to fix it, it would look nice as a wall decoration.
Serial number of 17850 puts it being made around 1906. Model 61 alto horn made by York and son. 2nd valve would need repair or replacement to function. All slides are free, but could probably be greased.
No mouthpiece orcs. Pretty sure the entire valve section at one point has been twisted a bit to right. Small dents endings around the horn. Cork on main slide probably needs a replacement to seal better.
