Introduction:

The Conn 17010HCW trombone mouthpiece, featuring a UMI rim (10.5CW, 10-1/2CW) and Lausmann backbore, is a popular choice among trombone players. Here, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of investing in this mouthpiece.

Pros:

1. UMI Rim: The UMI rim (also known as a smaller shank rim) is specifically designed to create a more focused and brighter sound. This feature is particularly beneficial for players who require a more resonant attack and improved intonation.

2. Flexibility: This mouthpiece is versatile and suitable for various genres, making it a great option for musicians playing in different styles, such as jazz, classical, and commercial settings.

3. Excellent Intonation: The combination of the UMI rim and Lausmann backbore results in improved intonation and pitch stability, allowing players to achieve a more accurate and consistent tone.

4. Suitable for smaller embouchures: The smaller shank and UMI rim cater to players with smaller embouchure sizes or those seeking a more flexible playing style.

5. Durability: Conn is a reputed brand known for producing high-quality mouthpieces, ensuring that this mouthpiece is built to last and reliable for extended use.

Cons:

1. Adjustment Period: As with any new mouthpiece, there may be an initial adjustment period to get accustomed to the UMI rim and its effects on the tone and response, which could take some time.

2. Limited Availability: This specific model may not be as readily available in local stores, and it might require more effort and time to find it.

3. Higher Price Point: Compared to some other market alternatives, this mouthpiece can be pricier. Nevertheless, its high-quality features make it a worthwhile investment for serious trombone players.

Conclusion:

The Conn 17010HCW trombone mouthpiece with a UMI rim (10.5CW, 10-1/2CW) and Lausmann backbore is a high-quality mouthpiece suitable for players seeking a versatile, bright, and focused sound while improving their intonation. With a durable build and the ability to cater to smaller embouchures, it may have a steeper learning curve, but the advantages far outweigh the cons for an experienced player looking for an upgrade.

Recommendation:

For trombone players desiring a more resonant attack, improved intonation, and the versatility to excel in various music styles, the Conn 17010HCW trombone mouthpiece with a UMI rim and Lausmann backbore is a recommended investment. However, this mouthpiece may not be suitable for beginners seeking an affordable option, who may instead consider entry-level mouthpieces.

Details:

The Conn 10 cw trumpet mouthpiece isn't common, but its a nice find. It is based on the Vincent Bach design but with a flatter rim, and more comfortable than some of radically-sloped rims found 10-1/2cw 10hcw examples. The medium-size, medium-depth cup is relatively standard for a middle-of-the-road trumpet tone - not overly dark or bright. It first appears in the 1988 beige Conn catalogs, not long after umi switched to fully outsourcing mouthpiece production lausmann.

There isn't much to say on this, other than its in infinitely better overall condition the last one we had. Theres a small bit of plating wear near the shank opening, but its not especially prominent. It could take an extra week in some cases. This example has great silver plating as well, with some light nicks micro scratches.

The shank opening is round, and its ready to play.
